One of our families got a car! I can’t overstate how important owning their own transportation is to the families. Without a car:
- Families need to rely on bus transportation. There is a stop by the Day Center. However, bus routes can be very long for a short trip, don’t always run when needed, and don’t always go where the families need to go.
- Guests use Uber which can be “uber” expensive and spends money that can be saved for other things.
- Families are dependent on others for what would be simple trips, which adds stress to them and contributes to loss of autonomy.
With transportation families can go to their doctor’s appointments, visit family, utilize food banks and other social services, transport their children to childcare, and most importantly, reliably get to work.
So, cars are a big deal! Through their own funds, and our Wheels UP program, a family was able to purchase a car. The Wheels UP program assists local families, not just those in our program, with assistance towards the purchase of a car or car repairs so they can get or keep their wheels!
